How to Replace a Toilet

When it comes to toilet installation, make sure the new model you purchase will fit into the existing space in your bathroom. Also be careful when removing the old toilet and setting the new one. Toilets are heavy and may break if dropped or knocked over. You could also crack your tile floor if you drop the unit.

• Before removing the old toilet, turn off the water.

• Take off the tank lid and remove the refill tube from the overflow pipe.

• Drain all of the water from the tank and use a rag or sponge to soak up any remaining water.

• Disconnect the water supply line.

• Disconnect the flapper chain.

• To remove the tank from the bowl, unscrew the tank bolts, remove the tank and place on a towel.

• To detach the bowl from the floor, remove the plastic caps on the bolts that attached the toilet to the floor and unscrew the nuts.

• Use a utility knife to loosen the seal between the bowl and the floor. Rock the toilet to free it from the floor and set it on an old towel or drop cloth. Remember to block the drainpipe with a rag to prevent sewer gas from escaping. Clean the floor around the drain hole.

• Insert a new wax gasket on the opening of the bowl, tapered side facing away. Make sure the toilet flange is tight. The flange helps make a snug connection between the toilet and the waste pipe. The flange sits on top of the floor and attaches to a collar that fits through the floor.

• Apply caulk to the base of the toilet, remove the rag from the drainpipe and place the toilet bowl on top of the flange. Make sure the toilet sits level. Gently tighten the washers and nuts onto the bolts and place the caps on top of the bolts.

• Insert the tank bolts through the base of the tank. Position the tank over the bowl and lower it into place. Tighten the nuts and washers to attach the bowl to the tank. Make sure the tank is level. 

• Connect the supply line between the shut-off valve and the fill valve, tighten the compression nut and open the shut-off valve.

• Run caulk along the bottom of the toilet to seal the joint between the toilet and the floor. 

• Turn the water back on and test the new toilet for leaks.
