Install a Toilet

Whether you’re remodeling your bathroom or just updating old fixtures, replacing an existing toilet doesn’t have to be complicated. We have provided some simple steps to follow when it comes to toilet installation.

When installing a toilet, make sure the new model you buy will fit into the current space in your bathroom. Also be careful when removing the old toilet and setting the new one. They are heavy and may break if dropped or knocked over. Or you could crack your tile floor if you drop the unit.

Drain the water

Shut off the water supply to the toilet. Flush the toilet several times to remove the water from inside the tank and most of the water from the bowl. If there is any water left in the bowl, use a cup to remove.

Disconnect the toilet

Unscrew the nuts that attach the toilet to the water supply line. Then, remove the nuts on the bolts located on the base of the toilet underneath the plastic caps.

Loosen the seal

Use a utility knife to loosen the seal between the bowl and the floor. Rock the toilet a bit in order to free it from the floor and set it on some old towels or drop cloths. Also remove the wax ring gasket. Remember to block the waste pipe with a rag to prevent sewer gas from escaping.

Place the New Bowl

Insert a new wax gasket on the bottom opening of the bowl, tapered side facing away. Make sure the toilet flange is tight. The flange helps make a close-fitting connection between the toilet and the waste pipe. The flange sits on top of the floor and attaches to a collar that fits through the floor.

Apply caulk and set

Apply caulk to the base of the toilet, remove the rag from the drainpipe and place the toilet bowl into place on top of the flange. Gently tighten the washers and nuts onto the bolts and place the caps on top of the bolts. Don’t tighten too much or you may crack the toilet.

Position the tank

Insert the tank bolts through the base of the tank. Position the tank over the bowl and lower it into place. Tighten the nuts and washers to attach the bowl to the tank. Again, don’t tighten too much or you’ll crack the porcelain. Make sure the tank is level. 

Connect the toilet

Connect the water supply line between the shut-off valve and the fill valve, tighten the compression nut and open the shut-off valve. Run caulk along the bottom of the toilet to seal the joint between the toilet and the floor.
